Nieuws MEDEDELING !!

Omschrijving | In 2007 CYDONIA (still called "Hills of Cydonia")
was founded. Five musicians from Freiburg, who
devote themselves entirely to progressive rock.
They concentrate on original songs that mature
again and again in the rehearsal room and ensure a
repertoire with complex and yet catchy
compositions which are intended to take the
listener on a musical journey. In their luggage:
rousing rock, enchanting melodies, deep
atmosphere, spacey improvisations, intricate
rhythms, floating bombast, suspenseful
songwriting, magical moments.
Review Siggy Zielinski - babyblaue-seiten.de:
"The prog quintet Cydonia from Freiburg im
Breisgau made their debut in December 2022 with
the CD "Stations". Originally known as Hills of
Cydonia, the band has been playing the
instrumental music since 2007 until they found a
suitable singer in the person of Michael Bernauer
in 2019. The name for the musicians, Cydonia is
symbolic of the unknown terrain that one would
like to explore musically (this refers to an area
on Mars and not to an ancient city, or to a genus
of plants, all of which are called Cydonia).
Cydonia`s stated goal is to play music from their
youth and it is said to have been progressive.
Before Cydonia, everyone involved played in
various other bands that didn`t necessarily play
prog. Lyrically, "Stations" sometimes addresses
topics that probably fall into the category of
science fiction. The cover features an image that
suggests both extraterrestrial and down-to-earth
themes. Behind a terrestrial railway station one
sees a landscape as if from another planet.
The impressive synthesizer contributions sometimes
remind me of Eloy. The band again cite Genesis,
Yes, Marillion and Porcupine Tree as the major
inspirations. On "Stations" Cydonia sticks to a
varied mixture of art rock and neoprog, in which
the versatile instrumental parts meet the mostly
melancholic vocal melodies. In the instrumental
sections, the melody-loving guitar themes are
always pleasantly noticeable.
The organ, piano and synthesizer parts repeatedly
seem to form the foundation of the compositions.
The first part of "Union of Souls" is again based
on lyrical acoustic guitars, as was the case with
Genesis, for example. The second part of the 15-
minute track is dedicated to a kind of spacey
neoprog, as if the musicians from Pink Floyd and
IQ were starting a joint project. The oriental
accents play an important role in “Caravan Of
Slaves”.
Incidentally, the last two pieces are older
concert recordings, even if you can hardly tell
from the sound. As is always the case at concerts,
the band is a bit more rocking and spirited than
in the studio. Cydonia is more like Deep Purple
than Marillion in the jam parts of "Caravan of
Slaves".
A noteworthy prog sign of life from Freiburg im
Breisgau, if you like the predominantly quiet
style of melodic prog."
