tossing around on your own, you could easily
the creative power that can be unleashed when you
do things together.
The Hamburg producer and multi-instrumentalist
FINALLY GEORGE reminds us with his new album "Icy
Skies": the list of artistic accomplices is long,
and the result is a gift to all art rock fans.
George`s debut "Life Is A Killer" made the prog
art rock scene collectively sit up and take notice
in 2018. Eclipsed magazine selected the album
the top 5 of the hundred best albums of the year.
Reviewers used comparables from Pink Floyd to
Steven Wilson, bombast and emotionality were
praised as well as the sophisticated songwriting
and excellent production.
Even then, FINALLY GEORGE gathered an impressive
group of collaborators, above all Styx drummer
Sucherman, who is not only one of the best of his
craft, but also one of the few drummers who - as
Styx frontman Lawrence Gowan once described it -
have "deep musical knowledge and sensitivity".
Sucherman is also back on "Icy Skies". He
his contribution to the album, which is quieter
has more melancholy than its predecessor:
material is harmoniously and rhythmically very
a dream for every drummer," he says, "Every song
like its own little film, to say it with my
colleague Dave Mattacks."
With music this good, your only job is not to
FINALLY GEORGE corrects this very modest
assessment: "Todd doesn`t just play the tracks as
session musician might do. He gives an incredible
amount of input, suggests things and thinks about
things. Without him," Icy Skies "would be not what
it is. "
The same can be said for the other FINALLY GEORGE
collaborators: Violonist Anne de Wolff (BAP,
Calexico), trumpeter Ingolf Burkhardt (NDR Big
Band), keyboardists Detlef Bösche and Mathias
Pogoda (Inga Rumpf) and the much-booked background
singer Anja Bublitz. "It`s been extremely
to work with all of these amazing musicians," says
George. "And I think you can hear this
creative energy on the album."
The mix by Frank Reinke and the mastering
(Ludwig Maier / GKG) ensure that "Icy Skies" is
also an acoustic experience, and the artwork comes
from a creative person whose art has often left
traces in art rock and prog world: Hajo Müller,
who also became famous as the cover artist of
Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson and Blackfield.|
