Nieuws MEDEDELING !!

Omschrijving | If you look at the current scene of progressive
rock and
metal, you could assume that the times of court
jesters,
dragons and unicorns are a thing of the past,
because
spearheads of the genre, such as Haken, Leprous or
TesseracT,
have nothing at all to do the clichés for which
the
prog was
once known. But then you stumble across a band
like
Azure and
suddenly the legends, myths and fantasy stories
are
more
realistic than they have been since the mid-1970s.
This is not only due to the platinum blonde
Targaryen mane of
front man Christopher Sampson and the imaginative
cover
artwork by Sophie Steinmore, but also the lyrics
of
the
individual pieces. I don`t have to say more than
`The Jester
Who Cheated Death` at this point.
Azure are no longer unknowns in the Prog scene and
should be
known to one or the other Euroblast visitor,
because in 2019
they made a remarkable appearance in the messed up
electric
kitchen, the cellar of the Cologne vinegar
factory.
Even then,
the British from the English city of Bristol
played
the first
pieces of their new record "Of Brine And Angel’s
Beaks" in
addition to tracks from their debut album "Wish
For
Spring"
and aroused anticipation for more. Because as
bizarre as the
musical mix of the five may have sounded to some
ears, it
seemed so unique to others. The musical mix that
Shaz Dudhia
(keyboard), Alex Miles (bass), Christopher Sampson
(vocals &
guitar), Galen Stapley (guitar), Sol Sinclair
(drums) offer
their listeners is second to none.
Azure fuse emotionally charged progressive rock
with the
anthem-like energy of power metal and enrich this
mixture with
80s synth sounds that seem as if they came from
early computer
fantasy role-playing games.
What is fascinating is that these fantasy sounds
are so
prominently at the center of the Azure sound
cosmos
that the
virtuoso instrumental work of the band members
often only
enters the listener`s consciousness after repeated
listening.
Because "Of Brine And Angel’s Beaks" is a
compositionally
complex album, whose individual layers first have
to be
diverged from one another.
And so the listener reveals a world of seafarers,
acolytes,
court jesters, jellyfish and Japanese
rainbringers,
which in
individual moments repeatedly awakens memories of
bands like
Iron Maiden, Marillion, Jadis or even 80s Yes, but
not in its
uniqueness really comparable to other
representatives of the
genre. |
